The Cuba Libre Story: Series 1 This documentary series recounts the tumultuous history of Cuba, a nation of foreign conquest, freedom fighters and Cold War political machinations.

The documentary series that chronicles the history of Cuba begins with an examination of the native Cubans, Spanish invaders and the introduction of slavery.

Sugar production on the island flourishes, but the country's relations with the United States sours, and military strongman Fulgencio Batista solidifies his power.

During Prohibition, the Mafia becomes a powerful presence on the island and gains a stranglehold on the successful gambling industry.

In December 1959, rebel forces led by Fidel and Raul Castro and Che Guevara topple the corrupt Batista regime.

Heroes of the revolution include the Castros Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos but Fidel Castro's brutality and radical leftist reforms divide them.

Fidel Castro nationalizes U.S. interests and aligns himself with Russia, leading the CIA to attempt an assassination.

In the 1980s, Cubans flee their restrictive country, cocaine finds its way into the government, and socialism in Europe collapses.

In the series finale, the end of the Cold War brings the country's isolation to a close.
