In the pre-dawn hours on June 6, 1944, 160,000 troops prepared to land on the French coast of Normandy. This would become the decisive turning point in World War II in Europe. Although the war would not end for another year, D-Day was the beginning of the end. This special edition pays tribute to the fallen during D-Day and the days after. You will see an incredible visual report of the challenging and difficult Operation Overlord (D-Day), the first morning on the invasion beach Omaha Beach until the last days of heavy battle at Falaise. You also get a very personal account of the German and Allied soldiers. On the basis of often emotional and poignant diary reports, personal letters and many private films, they describe what they have experienced and how they coped with it. Two million men fought for more than 12 weeks that summer on the beaches and fields of Normandy, trying to overrun Hitler's massive "Atlantic Wall" and drive the Germans out of France. Four hundred thousand combatants died, some in hand-to-hand fighting. New research shows that the survival rate for a soldier on the invasion beaches was 25 percent. How is it possible that 50 percent of the men survived? These two documentaries tell a different story. A beautifully crafted, detailed reconstruction shows what happened on the beaches that day. 'Surviving D Day' tells the epic story of the 12 hour battle that took place on June 6 1944, on Omaha beach in Normandy, France. Five years into World War II, the future of Europe hangs in the balance, as 34,000 US soldiers embark on a mission to launch the biggest attack ever from sea. This fascinating documentary, interviews the soldiers who fought at Omaha, recalling their experiences as they approached the shore line under intense cross fire.
